Polypectomy & Argon Plasma Coagulation
What is Polypectomy & Argon Plasma Coagulation?
Polypectomy: Removal of abnormal growths (polyps) in the intestine or stomach.
APC: A non-contact method using argon gas and electrical current to stop bleeding and treat abnormal tissue.

When is Polypectomy & Argon Plasma Coagulation Needed?
* Detection of colon or stomach polyps during colonoscopy/endoscopy
* Bleeding from ulcers or abnormal tissues
When to Consult a Doctor?
If you have blood in stool, family history of colon cancer, or abnormal growths, consult a gastroenterologist.
What Polypectomy & Argon Plasma Coagulation Can Detect?
- Residual Adenomatous Tissue:After a piecemeal polypectomy, small amounts of adenoma (precancerous polyps) may be left behind. APC can be used to ablate this visible residual tissue at the polypectomy base.
- Recurrent Adenomas:By ensuring complete removal of the initial polyp, APC helps to reduce the chance of new adenomas growing back in the same spot.
- Initial Diagnosis:
The initial diagnosis of whether a polyp is cancerous is made by a pathologist after the polyp is completely removed and sent for examination.
- Initial Removal of All Polyps:
While effective for removing polyps, APC’s primary role is to treat the remnants after a polypectomy, not to be the primary tool for removing all polyps itself.
- Detecting Polyps:The procedures themselves are not designed to “detect” new polyps, but rather to treat polyps that have been identified during an initial colonoscopy.
Benefits of Polypectomy & Argon Plasma Coagulation:
✅ Prevents cancer by removing polyps early
✅ Stops bleeding without surgery
✅ Safe, effective, and minimally invasive
