EVL & ERCP

What is EVL?

EVL (Endoscopic Variceal Ligation)

A treatment where small rubber bands are placed around enlarged veins (varices) in the esophagus to stop or prevent bleeding.

When is EVL Needed?

* Patients with liver cirrhosis
* Variceal bleeding (vomiting blood)
* Preventing re-bleeding in high-risk patients

When to Consult a Doctor?

If you experience vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, or have liver cirrhosis, seek immediate care.

What EVL Can Detect?

  • Esophageal varices:

    EVL is used to treat active bleeding from these swollen veins in the esophagus and to prevent their recurrence.

  • Gastric varices:

    During an EVL procedure, doctors may also detect and treat gastric varices, which are swollen veins in the stomach.

  • Portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG):

    This condition, which involves abnormalities in the stomach lining due to high pressure in the portal vein system, can also be identified and managed during EVL.

  • Red wale markings:
    These are red spots or streaks on the varices, which are high-risk indicators of variceal bleeding, and can be seen and documented during an EVL procedure.

Benefits of EVL:

✅ Prevents life-threatening bleeding
✅ Quick and minimally invasive
✅ Reduces risk of recurrent bleeding

ERCP

What is ERCP?

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography).

A combined endoscopy and X-ray procedure used for both diagnosis and treatment of bile duct and pancreatic diseases.

When is ERCP Needed?

* Gallstones blocking bile ducts
* Severe abdominal pain with jaundice
* Bile or pancreatic duct strictures

When to Consult a Doctor?

If you have sudden jaundice, persistent pain, or fever with liver/gallbladder problems, consult immediately.

What ERCP Can Detect?

  • Stones:

    Gallstones and pancreatic stones that have moved into the bile ducts or pancreas.

  • Tumors:

    Cancers or other masses in the bile ducts or pancreas.

  • Strictures (Narrowed Ducts):

    Blockages or narrowing of the ducts caused by scar tissue or other problems, hindering the flow of bile or pancreatic fluid.

  • Leaks:

    Evidence of leaks in the biliary or pancreatic ducts, which can occur due to injury or disease.

  • Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction:

    Issues with the muscle that controls the flow of bile and pancreatic fluid into the small intestine.

  • Irregularities:
    Any other abnormalities or irregularities in the structure of the bile and pancreatic ducts.
